A Clue in the Infinity Symbol

For embodying the divine in the material world.

Does the infinity symbol hold a clue to embodying divine consciousness?

The divine is a oneness in which all polarities are unified. In this plane, however, we exist in a field of polarities, a field of opposites: masculine-feminine, good-bad, day-night, space-time. How can we bring divine consciousness into this polarized space we inhabit?

This is where the infinity symbol comes in. Imagine any two polarities, let’s say masculine-feminine. Now imagine orbiting those two poles in a figure 8, spending time at one pole, trying to understand the masculine and then swinging around the other pole trying to understand the feminine, without getting stuck on either one. Continually moving around both poles, alternating from one to the other, is one way to hold both polarities in the unity of our own consciousness and thus approach them in a divine way.

The crossing point at the middle of the infinity symbol seems important too. Swinging around one pole, we’d view it on our right let’s say. Following the symbol’s path, we’d view the next pole on our left. I think that represents a necessary change in perspective, as understanding one pole from the perspective of the other would be quite difficult, I think.

If we identify strongly with a certain gender, perhaps we spend a little more time understanding and acting from that pole and a little less time understanding and acting from the other. Perhaps then the infinity symbol would have a larger and smaller loop. Strikingly, this is exactly the path that the sun takes throughout the year. Here’s an image that shows that.

The infinity symbol appears above the head of the Magician in the number 1 card of the Tarot’s Major Arcana, the card that represents our entry into the material world from the spirit world of the Fool. It’s as if the card is saying, “OK—you’re heading into the material world. Here’s a clue, in this symbol, for how to carry the divine with you while you’re there.”

I wish you all well on your journeys.
